Well now, if you’ve been lifting heavy things like I used to do back in the day, or maybe you’ve been bending your wrist a lot for work, you might feel a little soreness creeping in. It don’t matter if you’re lifting weights at the gym or carrying buckets of water, that wrist of yours sure can get sore. So, let’s talk about it and see what’s going on, ‘cause I know it can be real bothersome when your wrist starts hurting. If you’re not careful, that pain can turn into something worse, like tendinitis or even worse things.

What’s causing that soreness in the wrist?

Well, it could be tendinitis. That’s when the tendons in your wrist get all inflamed from too much heavy lifting or doing the same thing over and over. You know, like when you lift the same bucket of corn every day or keep moving your hand up and down in one motion for hours. That’s when you start feeling that ache or sharp pain in your wrist. It ain’t just a little thing either. It might hurt to lift things or even when you’re just doing normal chores. It can even hurt when you’re sitting still and don’t think it should. That’s the tendinitis acting up.

How does it feel?

Now, if your wrist is hurting, you might feel all kinds of things. Sometimes it feels sharp, other times like a dull ache. If it’s really bad, it might feel like pins and needles poking in your wrist, or even that burning sensation. And, let me tell ya, it’s hard to do anything if your wrist’s hurtin’ like that. Some folks get stiff wrists, too, and it can be hard to bend ‘em the way you used to. Other times, you might even feel a weakness, like you can’t grip things right. It ain’t no fun, I tell ya.

Well, it gets worse if you keep working your wrist too much. For example, if you bend it too much or try to lift something heavy, that pain will just get sharper. If you press on it or bend it back, it might hurt even more. But don’t you worry, it’s not the end of the world. Just means you gotta take care of it.

What can you do about it?

First off, rest is real important. You gotta give that wrist of yours some time to heal. Don’t be out there lifting heavy sacks of grain or carrying big pots of soup for a while. Let it rest! Then, you can apply ice to it. Just take a cloth, wrap up some ice, and put it on your wrist for a good while. It’ll help calm the swelling down. Some folks even wrap their wrist up with a bandage to keep it stable. Helps keep it from moving too much and making things worse.

Another thing is compression. You know, like when you tie a bandage around your wrist. It keeps it from swelling up too much and can make it feel better. If you have one of them fancy wrist supports, that’ll do just fine, too. And then, elevate your wrist when you get a chance. You know, prop it up with a pillow so it’s not hanging down all day. That helps the blood flow right and stops it from getting worse.

Now, I ain’t gonna lie, it can take a little while. It ain’t like magic, where you wake up the next day and your wrist’s all healed up. If you don’t take care of it, though, that soreness can turn into something worse like a sprain or even a fracture. If you keep working through the pain, you might end up with some serious long-term problems. So, be patient. Give your wrist a break, and it’ll heal in time.

When should you see a doctor?

If you’ve been resting and doing everything right, but that pain just won’t go away, you might need to see a doctor. Sometimes these things need a little extra help. A doctor can check if there’s something more serious going on, like a sprain or fracture. You don’t want to mess with that, ‘cause it can make things a lot worse if you let it go too long.

How can you prevent wrist pain in the future?

  • Don’t overdo it. Start slow and build up to lifting heavier weights or doing more tasks that involve your hands.
  • Take breaks. You need to rest that wrist, especially if you’re doing repetitive work.
  • Make sure your posture is right. Holding your wrist in a natural, neutral position can keep it from getting sore.
  • Stretch your wrist. Just like the rest of your body, your wrist needs to be stretched out to stay limber and avoid injury.
