Alright, alright, let’s talk about this… biryani rice packet thing. You know, the stuff they sell in stores now. Makes it easy for folks, I guess, but is it any good? Let’s see.
First off, they say you gotta use good rice for biryani. Basmati rice, that’s what they call it. Long and skinny, smells nice too. Costs a pretty penny, I tell ya. But they say it makes the biryani fluffy, not sticky like some other rice. That’s important, you know, you don’t want a big ol’ clump of rice. Nobody wants that.
- They say 75 to 100 grams of rice is enough for one person. That ain’t much, if you ask me. I always cook extra, just in case. You never know when someone might show up hungry.
- And that fancy rice, the Basmati stuff, it’s got a smell to it. You can tell it’s good just by sniffing it. They also say it’s got a good taste. Well, I hope so, for the price they charge!
Now, these packets… they make it sound so easy. “One-pot” they say. Like you just dump everything in and poof… biryani! I don’t know about that. Good food takes time, always has. But I guess some folks are busy, or maybe they just don’t know how to cook. So these packets are for them, I reckon.
One brand, Patak’s, they got this “3-step kit.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? Comes with spices, that curry paste stuff, and the rice, all measured out for ya. No fuss, no muss. They say no fake flavors in it, and that’s good. I don’t like that artificial stuff. Tastes like chemicals, if you ask me. And it says it’s good for vegetarians. Well, that’s fine, I guess, but I like my biryani with some meat. Chicken or lamb, that’s the best.
You can even buy these kits online now. Metro, that’s a store, they sell ‘em. You order it, and they bring it right to your door, or you can go pick it up. Handy, I suppose, if you can’t get to the store yourself. But I still like going to the store, seeing things with my own eyes. You can squeeze the tomatoes, you know, make sure they’re ripe.
So, this Patak’s kit, it’s got 164 grams. That’s enough for… well, maybe two people, if you’re not too hungry. And it’s got everything you need, they say. Whole spices, that curry paste, and the rice. Just saute the spices, they say, and then add the rest. Sounds easy enough, even for someone who doesn’t know their way around the kitchen.
But is it real biryani? That’s the question. I mean, biryani is supposed to be special. It’s got layers of flavor, you know? The meat, the rice, the spices… it all comes together just right. Can you get that from a packet? I’m not so sure. Maybe it’s good enough for a quick meal, but it ain’t the same as homemade. Not by a long shot.
Still, I guess it’s good to have options. If you’re in a hurry, or if you just don’t feel like cooking from scratch, these packets might be alright. Just don’t expect it to taste like your grandma’s biryani, that’s all. And if you got the time, I say make it yourself. It’s more work, sure, but it’s worth it in the end. You get to control the ingredients, you get to adjust the spices to your liking, and you get that satisfaction of knowing you made it with your own two hands.
So, there you have it. Biryani rice packets. Convenient, maybe, but not the real deal. You decide what’s right for you.
